Do you ever covet the decorative pillows in designer magazines & wonder how to get the look on a budget? I do & I have a trick to changing out my pillows to enhance my current decorating mood. This project is simple, easy & cost effective, not to mention the endless possible results.
Supplies:
Solid cloth dinner napkins (at least 2)
Pillow form (I used a 12×12 throw pillow)
Painter’s tape
Fabric paint
Brush or craft sponge
Needle & thread that coordinates with your fabric
Ruler
Pencil or chalk
Straight pins
Scissors
Sewing machine (optional)
I purchased a set of 6 dinner napkins & washed them prior to starting this project. Using dinner napkins makes this project simple due to the size, there’s no cutting involved for the size pillow I chose.
Pin 2 napkins together with the finished hem facing out on both sides. Either hand or machine sew along 3 sides just inside the napkin’s original hem. Once complete, turn the fabric inside out (the sewn hem will now be on the inside).
Next is creating the fabric pattern. I chose to create a chevron pattern, by cutting painter’s tape in equal length’s & placing it equal distance apart until the entire face of the shell is covered. Press firmly down on the tape before you begin to paint.
With fabric paint, brush the spaces between the tape pattern. Allow time for the paint to dry, according to the instructions on the bottle you’ve selected. You may need a second coat depending on your desired look.
Once the paint is dry, remove the tape, insert the pillow form & hand sew the open edge. To finish the 4th edge, fold in the hem, pin the edge together using straight pins, then hand sew.
If you prefer, you may finish the 4th edge by sewing snaps or if you are really fancy add a zipper. This will allow you to interchange your pillow creations as often as you like.
This is one of my favorite projects for the endless possibilities, low time commitment & gratification of seeing my finished project on a regular basis! You really can finish a project! Really!!
To further simplify, consider purchasing napkins with a printed pattern & skip the painting. Have an old t-shirt or sweater that you can’t wear but still love, guess what? Use it to create a pillow!
Have fun & celebrate your finished project – a designer pillow.
